June 2008

So on Friday June 13th, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A., performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival
in Manchester, Tennesee. All I have to say is HOLY FUCK. Her set was probably the most intense, high energy performance at Bonnaroo. I know this because I was lucky enough to witness it first hand and up close.

After an amazing set by !!! (chk chk chk), M.I.A. was scheduled to perform. !!! had set the bar quite high, and it was questionable whether or not M.I.A. could top it. There was even speculation that M.I.A. would literally be missing in action – nobody was even sure if she would show up for her Bonnaroo performance. This was because the Sri Lankan MC canceled her European tour, citing exhaustion as the main reason.

Reverse Graffiti: A Green Way to Express Yourself

by Andrew Boni on June 17, 2008

In this day and age, nearly everyone is concerned with the environment. We are all doing our best to care forAlexandre Orion's reverse graffiti mural in Sao Paulo, Brazil. mother earth. Some people accomplish this by recycling more, driving less, adapting fluorescent light bulbs, turning off the air conditioning, etc.

For Brazilian street artist Alexandre Orion, the best way to highlight the ongoing environmental crisis is to utilize a technique known as ‘reverse graffiti.’ To put it bluntly, ‘reverse graffiti’ is a form of graffiti that’s created by drawing with a cloth (or other cleaning tool) on a very dirty surface, rather than with a spray-paint can. In doing this, the art ends up etched into the filth and calls attention to the pollution in the area.

Ok, so summer is basically lurking right around the corner. With the relentless summer-like sun beating down on you, theres no better time than now to go get yourself a fresh fitted. Check out this throwback LA Kings hat from New Era. The people over at RockNJocks just got a handful (and by handful I mean 35) in stock. This hat conjures up images of the early 90′s and all that goes with it – like the rap group N.W.A. MC Ren was often seen sporting this bad boy around. Now all they need to do is make an LA Raiders throwback fitted, and we’re all set.

For the past 6 months, a rogue street artist nicknamed “The Decapitator” has been assaulting the streets of London with his unique brand of tag – mutating popular advertisements into headless corpses. There’s only one word to describe this – awesome. At the present moment, his identity is unknown, but he is definitely making a statement. Some may argue that the concept of shock value overlaying crass, in-your-face capitalism is nothing new. But, one thing that everyone can agree on is that this artist’s execution is truly original and spectacular. I tend to interpret these actions as one man’s response to the ever increasing shift that society is taking toward embracing materialism.

by Andrew Boni on June 7, 2008

Ok, so MySpace is the website that we all love to hate. It’s basically Facebook’s trashy and wild cousin. But don’t lie, you still check your MySpace from time to time hoping to see “New Friend Requests!” Anyway, MySpace has cornered the market on a concept that even Facebook can’t touch – it’s Secret Shows. MySpace’s Secret Shows debuted in January 2006 as a way to let fans get up close and personal with their favorite artists. Secret Shows are announced via MySpace bulletins usually only a few days in advance. The shows are always free and hosted in a small venue. Since it’s inception, Myspace’s Secret Shows have hosted a plethora of acts including Tokyo Police Club, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rilo Kiley, the Killers, Moby, Maroon 5, Tenacious D, Ice Cube, Lily Allen, James Blunt, and Neil Diamond.
