DJ Earworm United State of Pop

So I stumbled across this interesting video/song a few days ago. DJ Earworm, a San Francisco-based mash-up artist, created a 4½ minute song from the top 25 hits of 2008, according to Billboard magazine. I was a little hesitant to post it, since most of the music that is included in this mash-up reminds me of how mediocre/boring the year 2008 was for pop music. Nevertheless, DJ Earworm manages to create a decent, catchy mash-up track, and an even better music video to go along with it. The tracklist for this mashup is as follows: [read more…]

End of the year lists are one thing that I always look forward to seeing each December, during that special period of time between the magic and nostalgia of Christmas and the drunken debauchery of New Year’s Eve. We here at Jetcomx wanted to put together a special list; not just a list of best artists or best songs. We wanted to highlight the best, most interesting, and creative music videos from the year 2008. Hit the three-wheel motion.

It’s on like Donkey Kong.
You wanted that fast buck
Now I gotta light that ass up
.

Thus spake Ice Cube in the single “Now I Gotta Wet’Cha” from his 1992 album The Predator. It’s an excellent album, both danceable and grim, courtesy of Ice Cube and DJ Muggs’ typical sound—loping beats, P-Funk horns, Sly and the Family Stone guitar jangles, and nasty lyrics. This is not the Cube who gave us the 2007 family laff riot Are We Done Yet? No, this is the Cube of N.W.A., the Cube of “Fuck Tha Police,” and the Cube of these lyrics from “It Was a Good Day”: [read more…]

Fleet Foxes
Last week, indie folk band Fleet Foxes was featured on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. It marked the second occasion that the guys from Seattle appeared on network TV; they first appeared back on June on The Late Show with David Letterman. 2008 has been a huge year for Fleet Foxes; their second EP, Sun Giant, was released back in February and their self-titled debut album was released four months later. They also embarked on a North American and European tour from March until Septemer.

Billi Kid TIME magazine

We just wanted to send our congratulations to our friend and street artist Billi Kid. Earlier this week, Billi had one of his combo slaps featured in an article in TIME magazine. The particular combo slap features an image of president-elect Barack Obama, created by San Francisco based artist Zoltron, surrounded by the stickers of many other artists from around the world.

beautiful decay x soldier

Nowadays, it seems as if it is getting harder and harder to find magazines or publications with any substance. But for those interested in venturing into eclectic bookstores (i.e. Trident on Boston’s Newbury Street), look for the art and design publication Beautiful/Decay. Immediately, the cover draws in any passersby with it’s provoking and contemporary artwork. The cover of the recent issue X has a colorful portrayal of a soldier covered in graffiti standing in the middle of a surreal jungle scene. But the cover is only the beginning of what it holds printed inside. There are pages and pages of contemporary artwork from new artists, making Beautiful/Decay a great stepping-stone for emerging talent. In addition to the publication which is printed quarterly, Beautiful/Decay also has a website and e-mail newsletter that provides more information about the creative world and updates on B/D ventures, respectively.
