The Philly bred, world renowned hip hop act known affectionately as The Legendary Roots Crew (The Roots ), have been selected and are currently preparing to make a new home on one particular stage that is quite different from all the others that they have graced over the years; The stage of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, on NBC, as the resident house band. The Roots will debut, at the Highline Ballroom, where the show is shot, on March 5, 2009. Fallon, who many had originally become familiar with during his time on Saturday Night Life, has stepped in to replace Conan O’Brien, whom has moved on to do The Tonight Show, which was formerly hosted by Jay Leno (I know, this sounds like a late night soap opera storyline, but just try to follow along).  Many say that Jimmy Fallon has some figuratively large shoes to fill with his new found late night slot, but as the globe-trotting Roots ready for the most stationary gig they’ve ever held, some may wonder exactly how this new and ultimately untouched (by a hip hop act) platform will work out.

Two shoes in the collection of Nike Women’s Skinny Dunks will feature the Aurore textile design with feathers and butterflies. The other two designs will display the Les Ceries print,  showcasing cherries throughout the shoes.

The objective of the newly designed Women’s Skinny Dunk was to slightly alter the classic Nike style to better suit female enthusiasts, offering a better fit, without compromising the look that many have come to love and appreciate.

ant

There’s no grand unifying theme for this week’s column. Sometimes—and only sometimes—reductionism is inappropriate when referencing pop cultural artifacts, because evidence of a particular epoch need not be found within the subtext of obsolete trends and memes. Sometimes—and only sometimes—we can look at a pop cultural artifact as its own phenomenon. It remains both timeless and past its expiration date. The best of these become irrelevant the moment they enter public consciousness. With immediate irrelevancy, the pop cultural artifact stops aging. It’s born as an ant trapped in amber, preserved for future generations to marvel at its differences and similarities with contemporary cousins.

MIA Kanye West Jay-Z Lil' Wayne TI Grammys Last night, M.I.A., Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and T.I. performed their highly anticipated rendition of “Swagga Like Us” at the 2009 Grammys. Donning a black and white polka-dotted outfit, M.I.A. was the first one out on stage. Nine months pregnant, the British phenom looked as if her water was going to break if a stiff breeze hit her. When a familiar beat started playing, it seemed as if she was going to perform her hit single “Paper Planes” until she uttered her famous hook, “No one on the corner has swagger like us.” Then, Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and T.I. popped out on stage dressed in fresh looking tuxedos. Each of them took one verse of the song and killed it. I found it a little weird, however, that the signal faded in and out of black and white. Anyone else feel the same way? Check out the video: [read more…]
