Whenever an artist attempts to cover a popular song, it’s usually a pretty gusty thing. Cover songs ususally end up being one of two things: terrible or amazing. There’s no middle ground. Recently, New York University undergrad Nyle performed a cover of Lil’ Wayne’s “Let the Beat Build” off of Tha Carter III. This wasn’t an ordinary cover song though, definitely not. What made his rendition unique was the fact that the audio was recorded at the same time it was being filmed. It was all filmed/recorded in one continuous take as well — the film crew had to shoot 30 takes to get it just right. It even featured a wide array of instruments from a piano to a banjo to a trombone. Nyle, who’s graduating from NYU this May, stated that he made the video cover of Lil’ Wayne with a $2,000 grant from the university. His plans for after graduation you might ask? To continue to pay rent by throwing parties in his Bushwick party loft and try to make it big as a rapper.

itd be better if he didn’t have braids and had better breath control whilst said beat was building. sounds like a wee bit o’ the ol compression would be clever in assisting him as well or make him take another 30 of it. the verses are cute but he sounds rushed. video looks great, not in a patronizing way. it is a good idea. but really. this game is and will always be about mc skills. as stated, some lines are so ooomph that I wish it was a better take and he wasn’t floundering for breath like a landshark. at least he didn’t autotune the vocs or the grand ol opera of performers in this video.
oh and call wayne and tell him autotune is dead and can’t help him sell promqueen.
or dreads or whatever. ha, way to discredit that in a flash. and i thought i was slick.
me and nyle met freshmen year when i visited NYU to see my best friend. then he started interning at def jam durign my second year there. now he’s doing videos that the entire world has seen.
that’s tight. haha, should’ve got an autograph because it looks like he might be doing it big soon. how the hell did he get to intern for def jam?
I go to the Clive Davis dept. at NYU, so we have an internship requirement. The video actually filmed in my school.
p.s. Modi hit me up for that autograph :)
What’s up Nyle? Must be feeling good right about now to be getting all of the exposure. How’d it feel to get on the front page of Digg? Congrats man & keep up the good work
ps – you getting on Digg was due to this very blog post (im friends with badwithcomputer)
LOL wzup man. i didn’t really like that def jam internship, btw. because it was my second year, and i learned nothing. it was a great foot in the door, though. and i’ll be in NY soon for the ‘graph. good work w/ the video. you shoulda hollered at tahir to do the video!!! just so i could say “and i know the camera guy too!” but it looks great the way it came out.
