We’ll keep it short and sweet today. Our favorite rapper from Degrassi is back in the limelight again. We’ve already posted two of Drake’s mixtape albums, Comeback Season and So Far Gone, so it only makes sense for us to post the third. In this case, that would be Room for Improvement, Drake’s first official mixtape. This album is definitely a throwback, as it was released in 2006. Give it a good listen, see where Drake’s roots lie, and compare it to his new stuff.

Just stumbled across this collection of sick remixes that was released the other day from Team Teamwork, thanks to my girl Courtney. It’s so good, that I couldn’t wait around for Mixtape Mondays — I had to post it now in time for the weekend. The Good-ass Remixes Vol. 1 is the second release by Team Teamwork. Their first was The Ocarina of Rhyme, which was a mash-up album featuring hip-hop and the soundtrack of the video game classic The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
On The Good-ass Remixes Vol. 1, Team Teamwork mixes and mashes T.I., Lil Wayne, Kanye, Nas, Talib Kweli, UGK, Slim Thug, Ghostface, Outkast, and others with the likes of Sigur Rós, Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith, M83, Múm and more. The result is wonderfully danceable and catchy. I’d consider Team Teamwork to be like The Hood Internet‘s hot sister. The group is relatively unknown at the moment, but I would not be surprised at all to see them playing at Coachella or Bonnaroo in a few years time.

“He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster … and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
You may recognize these words from the great American novelist Mark Twain, or you may have just seen the quote scribbled on the opening frames of the music video for MGMT‘s hit song song, “Kids.” Either way, there’s no denying the fact that this is one weird-ass music video. And that’s putting it mildly. I’m pretty sure that MGMT planned the entire music video while on acid. Now that I think about it, acid-inspired music videos seem to be a recurring theme for MGMT.
Anway, after making it through the minute-long intro, and ignoring the fact that they traumatized a small child throughout, the video turns out to be pretty mediore. For some reason, I’m getting the feeling that they’re just trying to hard to be eccentric and/or edgy. But that’s just me. [read more…]

It might be the intro’s pulsing and the sing-stuttering or maybe it’s the rock pop and glazed vocals. I don’t know for sure, but whatever the reason, Phoenix’s single ’1901′ got me through finals week despite late nights, all nighters, and pure misery.
Emergency song kit coming your way:

It was the first single released from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix’s long-awaited May release. Well, probably more long-awaited for perennial Phoenix fans hailing from France and other European countries. Wolfgang is their fourth album release, which was some surprise to me, an American fan who’s just recently hopped the Phoenix train.
After some hefty google-ing, I discovered quite an impressive history.
It’s crazy to think these guys started out over a decade ago in suburbs on Versailles. Before the name Phoenix was even established, they were more ambiguously known as those dudes playing in that remix of ‘Kelly Watch the Stars’ by Air. Things got serious when guitarist Laurent Brancowitz committed to Phoenix by officially leaving Darlin’, an unsuccessful starter band with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (no worries, the two soon became Daft Punk). Earlier today, the hotly anticipated music video for Wale’s hit song “Chillin” feat. Lady GaGa was released. The video was directed by Grammy nominated director Chris Robinson. Overall it’s a decent, catchy song that’s definitely going to be getting some serious air time. Wale brings his A game as usual. The only weird thing is how much Lady GaGa sounds like M.I.A. It’s kind of annoying actually.
