Nowadays, it seems as if it is getting harder and harder to find magazines or publications with any substance. But for those interested in venturing into eclectic bookstores (i.e. Trident on Boston’s Newbury Street), look for the art and design publication Beautiful/Decay. Immediately, the cover draws in any passersby with it’s provoking and contemporary artwork. The cover of the recent issue X has a colorful portrayal of a soldier covered in graffiti standing in the middle of a surreal jungle scene. But the cover is only the beginning of what it holds printed inside. There are pages and pages of contemporary artwork from new artists, making Beautiful/Decay a great stepping-stone for emerging talent. In addition to the publication which is printed quarterly, Beautiful/Decay also has a website and e-mail newsletter that provides more information about the creative world and updates on B/D ventures, respectively. Now that it’s really starting to get cold (at least on the east coast), it’s time to start looking for new jackets that make a statement. For those who don’t want to just stick with the typical (and boring) Northface jackets, take a look at the various ones 55DSL are offering this season. 55DSL started off as an experimental spin-off of Diesel, but has now developed is own fun and exuberant personality. It has created a creative fusion of radical sports (surf, skate, snow) and urban culture. 55DSL wants their clothing to transition effortlessly from the sports scene, whether it be a mountainside or skate park, to the city scene. If the line’s clothing can withstand the weather and conditions of the mountainside, it should be able to withstand the toughest elements in the city. [read more…]
On Thursday September 25, I saw one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. America’s Best Dance Crew the Live Tour came to Boston, and I still cannot get over how much energy the performers brought into the theatre. The decor of the elegant Wang Theatre (typically used for opera and classical performances) provided a stark contrast against the urban dance crews on stage. A three-story metal structure was set up on stage that allowed the dancers and DJ to do their thing. As soon as the show started, the MC for the night immediately told the entire audience to get on their feet. Everyone was excited to be there (myself included) and were cheering and dancing the whole time. I can’t even explain how much better seeing the crews live is than seeing them on TV. All of the stunts and moves were much more dazzling in real life. Both Super Cr3w and Jabbawockeez were huge crowd pleasers and definitely deserved to win their respective seasons. [read more…]
So everyone goes through their obsessions every once in a while, and my obsession for the past year has been plaid. In particular, I love buffalo plaid. The fact that it’s getting colder (at least on the east coast) sucks, but it also means that I can get out my funky red buffalo plaid jacket/top. So when I started looking for a new pair of sneakers, it was only natural for me to gravitate towards Creative Recreation’s Purple Buffalo Sneakers. Although normally I tend to prefer lumberjack red buffalo print, I like the purple version of these high top sneakers simply because the purple gives them a more feminine look. Plaid itself has a very masculine look to it, but with the right styling it can give a girl an outfit with an edgy yin and yang of male and female. With these shoes though, the red version of the shoes was a little too masculine looking for my taste. The style of the sneaker itself is bulkier, so with the red buffalo print…the shoe just wasn’t balanced. However, the purple adds enough of a girly flair that the sneakers work. Plus, I really like the velcro over the front of the shoe. If you like what you see, check them out at Karmaloop here and snag a pair. I am excited to announce the launch of Kallusive in all Metropark stores nationwide. If you don’t already know, Kallusive is an up and coming, LA-based clothing company. All of their shirts demand attention and would make any passerby look twice. The intricacy of their shirts is astounding (with details on the sleeves and along the bottom of the tees) and really requires [read more…]
Congratulations SUPER CR3W!!!! On Thursday August 21, Super Cr3w took the gold at the season finale of the second season of America’s Best Dance Crew. Yet again, the west coast won the whole thing. I guess California (many of Super Cr3w’s members are from southern CA) is a breeding ground for amazing crews. What really made Super Cr3w stand apart from everyone else was their unique bboy style and mind blowing stunts. They gave America a huge peek into the break dancing world and developed their choreography skills into a force to be reckoned with. Out of all the crews, Super Cr3w showed the most diversity and definitely deserved the champion title. [read more…]
Whenever someone wants a fly pair of sneakers, the default shoes everyone tends to look for are Nike Dunks. Dunks will always be stylish, but why not switch things up a bit and go for a fly pair of Nike Terminators? Compared to Dunks, the shape of the Terminator High Supremes is narrower and more fitted. The Terminators still have the typical oversized look of Nikes, but have a less bulky appearance than Dunks. The style makes me think of a riced out pair of Vans high tops. [read more…]
Since I came home for the summer, I have been spending a lot of my shopping time in The Closet: California Couture. Everything they have in there is the epitome of street California fashion, which is definitely a style I have missed a lot since I moved out to Boston. All my time intensely searching through the racks at The Closet has made me fall in love with the company OBEY. Their screenprints grab your attention and have a message that means more than “it looks cool.” [read more…]
