Bon Iver Justin Vernon

Indie-folk band Bon Iver just released the official music video for their hit song ”Holocene,” which is a track off of their self-titled sophomore album.

Personally, “Holocene” isn’t one of my favorite Bon Iver songs (I much prefer “Perth,” Minnesota, WI,” & “Michicant”), so naturally I’m not a huge fan of the video. Nevertheless, it’s a well crafted video that’s quite fitting for “Holocene.”

Bon Iver is slated to begin their North American tour in September, followed by a European one in October and November. [read more…]

the-national1

Check out The National on The Late Show with David Letterman. Somewhat surprisingly, they performed “Conversation 16″ which I’d say is one of the lesser known tracks off of their critically acclaimed album High Violet.

It’s cool to see the Arcade Fire’s Richard Parry perform along with them. You can see him in the back with long, red hair.

Yes… some new Fleet Foxes has made its way onto the internet. The song is titled “Helplessness Blues” and it gives us a fresh dose of that classic Fleet Foxes sound. It’s a cut off of their upcoming second album of the same name.

Good news, fellow Oberst worshipers!

NPR is streaming Bright Eyes’ new album The People’s Key, a month prior to its debut in March. Take a listen now, that’s what I’m doing this very moment!

I’m only one track in, so far it’s somber and a militant. The religious tones are so Conor, it makes me smile.

Tell us what you think!

Lykke Li

Swedish songstress Lykke Li has released the second single from her sophomore album Wounded Rhymes. “I Follow Rivers” stays true to Lykke Li’s unique sound of lo-fi vocals and slow beats while still bringing something new to the table. Be sure to check out the remix by The Magician as well. [read more…]

top songs of 2010

I’m back with my absolute favorite songs of this year!

I was not in America for half the year, so I’ll admit that I wasn’t on my A game with respects to the latest and greatest on the airwaves… feel free to argue with me (although praise would be nice, too).

Charts, reviews, and Pitchfork aside, this is what I was listening to on repeat in 2010…

Conor Oberst Bright_Eyes
I know that the splintered voice of Conor Oberst isn’t for everyone, but for those who’ve felt the warmth from the moans of Fevers & Mirrors, the happy-sad feeling of Lifted, the somewhat conditioned disappointment of Cassadaga, this is big news.

It seems, to my heart’s content (and to that of many others), Oberst still hasn’t gotten his fill from the Mystic Valley Band, nor from his ferociously folk counterparts. So with this, the heard-about-but-never-seen Yeti of a Bright Eyes album now has a concrete release date!

Oberst rounds up a few old faces, longtime band mate Nathaniel Walcott and producer (as well as a fellow MOF member) Mike Mogis to bring us (drum roll…) The People’s Key. It’s Bright Eyes’ seventh studio album and will be available February 15, 2011.

Here’s the track list… I never really understood why this is important to include so prematurely, but when you got the goods, show ‘em.

Lissie
American folk-rock singer Lissie recently performed a cover of Kid Cudi’s hit single “Pursuit of Happiness” while at England’s Great Escape festival. The woman’s got an amazing voice and really puts an interesting spin on the song. The only singer that I would liken her to would be Karen O. of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame, but even that’s a stretch.

Lissie’s debut album Catching a Tiger is set for release later this month. [read more…]
