Jay-z Kanye West

Kanye West and Jay-Z have been working on an album together over the last few months. The album, Watch the Throne, was originally set to be released back in the summer. After some delay, we now know that it’s going to drop next week, according to Kayne himself. He made the admission during his New Years celebration with Jay-Z and Rihanna. Considering the fact that these are two guys at the very top of their games, it should be nothing short of mind-blowing. [read more…]

Best Cosat

Last night, LA-based Best Coast performed their hit song “Boyfriend” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Best Coast made waves in 2010 with the release of their debut album Crazy for You. I love the chill, surfer-rock vibe that these guys give off. They’re definitely a band to watch in 2011. [read more…]

MGMT
Check out the new music video for the opening track off of MGMT’s sophomore album, entitled “It’s Working.” Directed by French graphic designer So Me, the video is both less disturbing than the “Kids” video and less trippy than the “Time to Pretend” video. Fear not though, because that’s actually not a bad thing. So Me’s creation is interesting enough without monsters and acid trips. [read more…]

big-boi-crystal-castlesStumbled across this gem today from Pitchfork. It’s Big Boi (of Outkast fame) freestyling over one of Crystal Castles’ new tracks, “Empathy.” It’s cool to hear that famous voice freestyle over such a different type of beat. Watch the video. [read more…]

DJ/Producer Diplo Major LazerThomas Wesley Pentz, better known by his stage name Diplo, is one of the hottest DJs/producers in the hip-hop/dance-funk genre today. To most people, he’s known for producing the 2007 smash hit single “Paper Planes” by M.I.A. But to others, he is one half of the collaborative side-project Major Lazer with fellow DJ Switch. Diplo is also owner of the Mad Decent record label, which has signed such artists as Blaqstarr, Boy 8-bit, Crookers, Rusko, and Toy Selectah.

Recently, Diplo sat down for an interview with Creators Project at Bob Marley’s legendary recording studio down in Jamaica.  Check it out.

Drake Rapper Best I Ever Had
Today marked the release of Drake’s much anticipated “Best I Ever Had” music video. It’s been a big week for the Degrassi star-turned rapper. A couple of days ago he was signed to Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money record label. Being that “Best I Ever Had” is Drake’s most popular song, I expected the video that accompanied it to be top notch. That’s why I was a little let down when I saw it earlier today.

First of all, the video has nothing to do with the song. The concept of the video seems to have come out of left field. I thought that Drake was above the whole big-breasted-women-in-skimpy-outfits-talking-in-sexual-innuendo in rap videos thing. Guess not. Secondly, the video is directed by Kanye West, who has basically no directing experience whatsoever. I realized that it was Kanye West the moment I laid eyes on the high school lion mascot; it basically screamed of Kanye’s The College Dropout and its bear mascot. [read more…]

Fleet Foxes

The indie-folk heroes from Seattle are at it once again, this time performing in and around Paris, France for La Blogotheque‘s Take Away Show. In this raw performance, Fleet Foxes show us just how versatile they really are. They perform two songs in this clip: “Sun Giant,” which is off of Sun Giant EP, and “Blue Ridge Mountains,” which is off of their self-titled debut album.

“Sun Giant” sounds great, but “Blue Ridge Mountains” sounds utterly remarkable, due to the acoustics. The unbelievably high ceilings and concrete floors/walls of an abandoned section of the Grand Palais (a huge exhibition hall in Paris that was built over 100 years ago) help create the cathedral-like sound. Whenever I listened to Fleet Foxes, I always imagined them recording in a place like this for some reason. I think it’s because they always tend to sing acappella in the middle of a song, and it sounds echoey, like in a cathedral. Anyway, take a look at the video. [read more…]
