Canadian indie rock band Broken Social Scene recently performed their rendition of Modest Mouse’s hit 2004 song “The World at Large.” They did it in conjunction with The Voice Project, which is a non-profit that raises money for women in war-ravaged Northern Uganda. The Voice Project works by getting artists to cover other artists songs and continuing one long chain of covers. The artists thus spread the word about the non-profit and advertisers, sponsors, and individuals donate on their site.

The video gives a glimpse into what it’s like to be Broken Social Scene when they’re working in the studio. They definitely put their trademark sound into the Modest Mouse classic. I love the way they can seemingly just mess around on their instruments and create they perfect melody.

Battles band

Check out the latest music video from NYC-based math-rock band Battles. The video is for their single “Ice Cream” which is a cut off of their upcoming summer album Gloss Drop. “Ice Cream” is a super catchy track that just might turn Battles into a household name. If Gloss Drop is anything like Battles’ 2007 album Mirrored, I’m going to be one of the first to scoop it up — Mirrored definitely has a special place in my heart as one of the top 5 albums to emerge from 2007.

Post-rock instrumental band Explosions in the Sky have released the follow-up to their hit 2007 album All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. Take Care, Take Care, Take Care is Explosions in the Sky at their absolute best. I’ve been listening to the album for the past day or so, and its one of my new favorites. Definitely give this a listen. You can stream it live from their site. [read more…]

Okay, Foo Fighters aren’t exactly indie (the album cover sure looks it though-), but they are a band you should probably care about, regardless of your nit-picky sub genre preferences.

Wasting Light, the group’s seventh studio album, is due out on April 12th. The record casts an interesting light on the group’s honed formula with a visceral analog production job courtesy of Butch Vig (known for his defining work on Nirvana’s multi-platinum Nevermind).

The first couple tracks are rocking pretty hard- it’s a relief to hear them doing that again.

The Foo’s have sounded like hydrant-tethered mutts for their past couple releases- always about to bite down where it hurts with that riff that kills or vocal line that leaves you reeling, but pulling back at the last second, afraid to let loose. No such gun-shyness seems present here.

“Bridge Burning” and “White Limo” simply slay. The discordant intro of the opener brings back an edginess the group hasn’t had since One By One and “White Limo” is a blistering riff feast that will have the horns flying in every direction. On the other end, the first single, “Rope,” shows the band feeding a growing hunger for experimentation with slicked-back jazzy chord choices and dreamy falsetto lines from Grohl. [read more…]

Here’s to hoping the rest of the record trumps this.

justice-civilization

A new track by French electro duo Justice has been released onto the internet. It was ripped from an upcoming Adidas commercial, which is why there are a few odd sound effects thrown in there. “Civilization” is the first single off of Justice’s upcoming sophomore album.

After listening to this track, I’m convinced that Justice is back and better than ever. Can’t wait for the release of the album. [read more…]

I’ve learned something very valuable in college, and that’s to hold basement parties dear to your heart.

There’s going to be a juncture in all of our lives where we can’t attend them anymore. So enjoy the grungy keg rooms, the mysterious ducks into a dark space with your closest friends, and the sloppy exits with a new friend.

The last basement party I went to brought me new friends in a less Biblical sense.

Finley Knight is the best new friend your ears can have. For all of us crazies dancing around, Finley Knight also did our bodies some good, too. We grooved with plastered-on smiles, stripping some layers so our sweaty bodies could keep moving with the music. My good friend P. Mac near died and rose to heaven when they played his requests for Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire on the Mountain.” The songs suited the band well, a band that’s sort of like the bastard child of all rock, funk, and jam genres. Finley Knight shows us that being genre-ambiguous is sometimes a beautiful, beautiful thing. [read more…]
