MGMT

“He who fights with monsters  might take care lest he thereby become a monster … and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”

You may recognize these words from the great American novelist Mark Twain, or you may have just seen the quote scribbled on the opening frames of the music video for  MGMT‘s hit song song, “Kids.” Either way, there’s no denying the fact that this is one weird-ass music video. And that’s putting it mildly. I’m pretty sure that MGMT planned the entire music video while on acid. Now that I think about it, acid-inspired music videos seem to be a recurring theme for MGMT.

Anway, after making it through the minute-long intro, and ignoring the fact that they traumatized a small child throughout, the video turns out to be pretty mediore. For some reason, I’m getting the feeling that they’re just trying to hard to be eccentric and/or edgy. But that’s just me. [read more…]

It might be the intro’s pulsing and the sing-stuttering or maybe it’s the rock pop and glazed vocals. I don’t know for sure, but whatever the reason, Phoenix’s single ’1901′ got me through finals week despite late nights, all nighters, and pure misery.

Emergency song kit coming your way:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It was the first single released from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix’s long-awaited May release. Well, probably more long-awaited for perennial Phoenix fans hailing from France and other European countries. Wolfgang is their fourth album release, which was some surprise to me, an American fan who’s just recently hopped the Phoenix train.

After some hefty google-ing, I discovered quite an impressive history.
It’s crazy to think these guys started out over a decade ago in suburbs on Versailles. Before the name Phoenix was even established, they were more ambiguously known as those dudes playing in that remix of ‘Kelly Watch the Stars’ by Air. Things got serious when guitarist Laurent Brancowitz committed to Phoenix by officially leaving Darlin’, an unsuccessful starter band with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (no worries, the two soon became Daft Punk). Wale's "Chillin" feat. Lady GaGa Music Video

Wale Lady GaGa ChillinEarlier today, the hotly anticipated music video for Wale’s hit song “Chillin” feat. Lady GaGa was released. The video was directed by Grammy nominated director Chris Robinson. Overall it’s a decent, catchy song that’s definitely going to be getting some serious air time. Wale brings his A game as usual. The only weird thing is how much Lady GaGa sounds like M.I.A. It’s kind of annoying actually.

When you think of graphic T-shirt companies, what comes to mind? BustedTees? How about Snorg Tees? Maybe Johnny Cupcakes? Or even Karmaloop? Well, it’s time for them to step aside, because there’s a new kid on the block — or company I should say. Boston based Mer+ge, founded by former NCAA basketball player and bio/premed major Victoria Jones, helps break the monotony that seems to have accumulated within the graphic t-shirt industry. By doing the unconventional Mer+ge has begun to make quite a name for itself.

Our goal at Mer+ge is simple… we provide clothing that stands for something. Our original designs and graphics promote self-expression and unity and strive to eliminate arbitrary separations among social groups.  Mer+ge designs use  political, social, and biological messages to merge science with art and demonstrate that gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. are things that do not necessarily define us, but are rather just one part of who we are. More than a business, Mer+ge is dedicated to freedom of self-expression and unity. So now it’s your turn to make the Mer+ge.

Recently, Jetcomx’s head writer was lucky enough to sit down and chat with the budding entrepreneur/renaissance woman. [read more…]

Wiz Khalifa Flight SchoolThis week, I feel like showing some love to the up-and-coming rap genius Wiz Khalifa. Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, the 21-year old Wiz Khalifa has already shared the stage with the likes of Ghostface Killah, Styles P, Lupe Fiasco, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Cham, Little Brother, Clipse, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Lil Scrappy, Mario, T.I., Nas, and Rich Boy. Back in 2008, his hit single “Say Yeah” dropped to critical acclaim. I remember I had that track on repeat for days. Khalifa’s version of “Say Yeah” was even mashed-up in the song “Don’t Stop” off of Feed the Animals by Girl Talk. [read more…]

Gregg Gillis Girl TalkGregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, has been known to frequently perform on college campuses and take over the college music scene. In fact, he got his start performing shows on the weekends while still a student at Case Western Reserve University. He eventually went on to graduate, and get a job as an engineer before quitting in 2007 to concentrate on music full time.

Just last month, he was one of three big artists who performed at Yale’s annual Spring Fling festival (the other two being N.E.R.D. and Wale).  As expected, Girl Talk got the crowd bumping (and sweating) with his unique dance remixes and eclectic persona. Thanks to the guys over at freeculturemusic, the live recordings of Girl Talk at Yale have now been released for your listening pleasure. He performs a bunch of his classic hits the way you’re used to hearing them, as well as other tracks with subtle variations that only happen during his live sets. Enjoy. [read more…]

Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's BlitzIt may not need justification, but it’s become so obvious that I have to talk about it.

Artists love It’s Blitz!. They just want to get their hands around it, their fingers in it.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have succeeded in making even the alternative unorthodox with this latest album release. And track by track, the remixes pour out. Ears first perked with Animal Collective’s take on ‘Zero,’ a dark horse remixer if that race ever existed. Intriguing, worth the listen, but nothing to write home about. [read more…]

Passion PitJust stumbled across the music video for Passion Pit’s hit song “The Reeling.” The effects in this video, not to mention the song itself, are completely dope. I love the vintage and gritty feel that the beginning of the video gives off. This is one of the most creative videos that I’ve seen in a while and it definitely gets my vote as one of the coolest music videos of 2009. I’m sure that this will be in everyone’s top 10 list come December.

In case you forgot, Passion Pit’s debut album Manners dropped last week among critical acclaim. You should pick up the album, if you haven’t already. They will also be playing at Bonnaroo on June 11th in Manchester, Tennessee. [read more…]
