17 Hours have never passed so quickly. Maybe it was the stop at Sonic that kept us going (us New Englanders think of it as some Holy Grail of fast food), but most likely it was the excitement of Bonnaroo finally becoming a reality. Honestly, I feel like my visit in Manchester, TN was a fantasy I dreamt up for my own fun. But it happened, and I have the lime green wristband, 3D ticket, and tie-dye t-shirt to prove it.

Even when you talk with people who went, Bonnaroo is hard to describe. If there’s a God, I hope heaven is a big ol’ Bonnaroo in the sky (sure as hell I’d go to church more often). Some friends from Boston College plus some and I all arrived around 5 am on Thursday, pitching our tent and canopy by the light of the sunrise. We napped, and then the adventure officially started.

Here’s the layout of Bonnaroo, 700 acres of former farming lands: Centeroo is an area where all the stages are located and carnival-like vendors. That majestic red archway you see in your friends’ Facebook albums? That’s the entrance to Centeroo. They sell anything from traditional pizza to deep fried gator, and as far as souvenirs go, buy a cool band posters or a didgeridoo. When and if you go, make sure to stop at the Wonder Waffle stand to get the hot waffle sandwich: a cube of vanilla ice cream between two thick waffles smothered in chocolate syrup. Surrounding Centeroo are all the campsites grouped by movie titles and divided by that movie’s characters. Ours was Pussy Galore in the James Bond area… we all got a kick out of that. Port-a-potties are located throughout, and you get used to peeing in the dark after the first two nights. Showering is a no-no. I mean you can for a little less then 10 bucks, but if you’re going to Bonnaroo you might as well do it up right. [read more…]

Victoria Jones

When you think of graphic T-shirt companies, what comes to mind? BustedTees? How about Snorg Tees? Maybe Johnny Cupcakes? Or even Karmaloop? Well, it’s time for them to step aside, because there’s a new kid on the block — or company I should say. Boston based Mer+ge, founded by former NCAA basketball player and bio/premed major Victoria Jones, helps break the monotony that seems to have accumulated within the graphic t-shirt industry. By doing the unconventional Mer+ge has begun to make quite a name for itself.

Our goal at Mer+ge is simple… we provide clothing that stands for something. Our original designs and graphics promote self-expression and unity and strive to eliminate arbitrary separations among social groups.  Mer+ge designs use  political, social, and biological messages to merge science with art and demonstrate that gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. are things that do not necessarily define us, but are rather just one part of who we are. More than a business, Mer+ge is dedicated to freedom of self-expression and unity. So now it’s your turn to make the Mer+ge.

Recently, Jetcomx’s head writer was lucky enough to sit down and chat with the budding entrepreneur/renaissance woman. [read more…]

Passion PitJust stumbled across the music video for Passion Pit’s hit song “The Reeling.” The effects in this video, not to mention the song itself, are completely dope. I love the vintage and gritty feel that the beginning of the video gives off. This is one of the most creative videos that I’ve seen in a while and it definitely gets my vote as one of the coolest music videos of 2009. I’m sure that this will be in everyone’s top 10 list come December.

In case you forgot, Passion Pit’s debut album Manners dropped last week among critical acclaim. You should pick up the album, if you haven’t already. They will also be playing at Bonnaroo on June 11th in Manchester, Tennessee. [read more…]

Passion Pit MannersIt was February 2007. Michael Angelakos, a student and singer/songwriter at Emerson College, was looking for that special gift to give to his then girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. What he came up with were six songs recorded under the alias Passion Pit. The songs failed to woo his lover, but spread like wildfire at Emerson and caught the collective interest of the student body. It was then that Angelakos realized he had something big on his hands.

The six songs morphed into an EP named “Chunk of Change” and was officially released in late September 2008. On it was a song called “Sleepyhead,” which has since gained over 2.6 million listens on MySpace and over 1 million views on YouTube. The success of “Sleepyhead” led to Passion Pit landing a record deal with New York City-based Frenchkiss Records and Columbia Records in the UK. It’s also helped Passion Pit gain a full-fledged quartet for live performances. [read more…]

beautiful decay x soldier

Nowadays, it seems as if it is getting harder and harder to find magazines or publications with any substance. But for those interested in venturing into eclectic bookstores (i.e. Trident on Boston’s Newbury Street), look for the art and design publication Beautiful/Decay. Immediately, the cover draws in any passersby with it’s provoking and contemporary artwork. The cover of the recent issue X has a colorful portrayal of a soldier covered in graffiti standing in the middle of a surreal jungle scene. But the cover is only the beginning of what it holds printed inside. There are pages and pages of contemporary artwork from new artists, making Beautiful/Decay a great stepping-stone for emerging talent. In addition to the publication which is printed quarterly, Beautiful/Decay also has a website and e-mail newsletter that provides more information about the creative world and updates on B/D ventures, respectively.

Leaders of the Boston-area sneaker elite, Concepts, teamed up with Nike Sportswear and DJ Clark Kent, to serve a more than generous offering for the sole that is guaranteed to give sneaker heads something to be thankful for well after the holidays have ended.

The Black Friday Nike Air Force 1, personally designed by sneaker enthusiast DJ Clark Kent (not to be confused with a “collector”), has redefined and reintroduced the term “classic” in relation to this popular Nike style. The shoe is, as Clark Kent described at today’s Concepts drop, “a fly luxury shoe without the luxury price tag”. The sneaker’s details include black pony hair, lenticular material, black patent leather, and a rainbow candy sparkle sole. We’re willing to bet that Clark’s impressive 1,800 pairs of Air Force 1′s, which are part of his massive 2,200+ sneaker arsenal didn’t hurt the chances of his design making it into production.

Boston Through the Eyes of Nick Keating

Boston Through the Eyes of Nick Keating

This amazing short film by Nick Keating reflects the personal experiences of a man living and exploring the beautiful city of Boston. From his video description:

I try to ride my bike around Boston everyday, listening to my ipod, and enjoying all the beautiful things the city has to offer. Riding my bike is a time to relax, reflect and just get away from any or all worries. Every shot in this video is a point along my ride that I stop and think about life. This short is meant to show how I see Boston, every time I go for a ride. Enjoy.

Tech mumbo-jumbo:
Shot with Sony FX1
Edited with Final Cut Pro
Song: Air “La Femme d’Argent”
