Last night at the grand opening of RVSP Gallery in Chicago, a star-studded line-up of artists performed including Really Doe, GLC, Mr. Hudson, Consequence, Big Sean, Common and Kid Cudi. Cudi’s set was pretty epic, and it included familiar songs such as Jay-Z’s single “Already Home,” “Down & Out,” “Pursuit of Happiness,” A Tribe Called Quest’s “Buggin’ Out,” “Day ‘N Night,” and “Make Her Say.” If the free show with Cudi wasn’t enough, surprise appearances by both Consequence and Common nearly blew the roof off of the place. Check it out. [read more…]

Oh where did this all start? Although Roger Troutman or Teddy Riley are often credited for the first use of auto-tune, that was in fact the talkbox. I once heard that the pioneer of auto-tuning is none other than Cher. That’s right, ‘Do you believe in liiiiife after looooove!?’ Who knew this diva would influence artists in totally different genres.

T-Pain Auto-tune

Now it seems auto-tune is for the masses. Haters tend to target T-Pain, the most notorious (ab)user of auto-tune, but some others include Akon, Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West. Now we see it spreading from R&B to indie rock with Discovery, the much talked-about love child of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot.

Personally, I’m at a loss. I do not know what to think of auto-tune. I had no respect for T-Pain until I watched his interview with DJ Skee of Los Angeles’ KIIS-FM. When asked about the active use of auto-tune in his music, he responded, [read more…]

yorke-jayzNew York-based producer Max Tannone, formerly Minty Fresh Beats, is back with a second dose of his killer Jay-Z / Radiohead mash-ups. He first burst onto the mash-up scene back in January with the release of the original Jaydiohead album. It garnered national attention and found its way onto Last Call with Carson Daly. Even the Hova himself said that Jaydiohead was dope. [read more…]

MIA Kanye West Jay-Z Lil' Wayne TI Grammys Last night, M.I.A., Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and T.I. performed their highly anticipated rendition of “Swagga Like Us” at the 2009 Grammys. Donning a black and white polka-dotted outfit, M.I.A. was the first one out on stage. Nine months pregnant, the British phenom looked as if her water was going to break if a stiff breeze hit her. When a familiar beat started playing, it seemed as if she was going to perform her hit single “Paper Planes” until she uttered her famous hook, “No one on the corner has swagger like us.” Then, Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and T.I. popped out on stage dressed in fresh looking tuxedos. Each of them took one verse of the song and killed it. I found it a little weird, however, that the signal faded in and out of black and white. Anyone else feel the same way? Check out the video: [read more…]

Mixtape Mondays: Jay-Z vs. Coldplay Viva La Hova

by Jim Fields on November 3, 2008

Viva La Hova
Late one night, I was at a small party, doing DJ duty and selecting songs on my iPod. I searched for a while, scrolled to a song, then clicked “play.” Chris Martin, of Coldplay, began to croon out his slow (medical?) ballad, “Fix You.” Initially, the crowd was not happy with this choice. “When you feel so tired that you can’t sleep,” Chris sang, slowly. “Stuck in reverse!” he whispered. Suddenly, the word “reverse” began repeating, and a bass beat started thumping. People at the party started tapping their feet. The beat built up, people started dancing, and by the time Jay-Z (aka Jazzy, Sean Carter, Jiggaman, Hova, The Roc, etc.) began rapping, the party was bumping.
