Diary of an ATL Brave is the first mixtape project by Atlanta native Donnis and dropped back on August 20. I didn’t get the chance to give a listen until almost a week later on a plane back to the east coast and I gotta say I listened to it three times through on that flight.
So lets get right into it. Donnis has a southern swagga and drawl but his flow has substance and is as hard as any NY lyricist. He’s got some good one liners but his strength is really how his thoughts develop through a verse and even between verses. There’s a real hunger in his songs and the result is a really high quality project. If you just listen to beats you can get by on this but you’ll be missing the stories in the songs that Donnis tells so well.

Just stumbled across this collection of sick remixes that was released the other day from Team Teamwork, thanks to my girl Courtney. It’s so good, that I couldn’t wait around for Mixtape Mondays — I had to post it now in time for the weekend. The Good-ass Remixes Vol. 1 is the second release by Team Teamwork. Their first was The Ocarina of Rhyme, which was a mash-up album featuring hip-hop and the soundtrack of the video game classic The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
On The Good-ass Remixes Vol. 1, Team Teamwork mixes and mashes T.I., Lil Wayne, Kanye, Nas, Talib Kweli, UGK, Slim Thug, Ghostface, Outkast, and others with the likes of Sigur Rós, Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith, M83, Múm and more. The result is wonderfully danceable and catchy. I’d consider Team Teamwork to be like The Hood Internet‘s hot sister. The group is relatively unknown at the moment, but I would not be surprised at all to see them playing at Coachella or Bonnaroo in a few years time.

What’s up everyone. We’re going to keep it short and sweet for today’s mixtape. Kid CuDi’s stuff seems to be getting played on every radio station across the country right now. So, I figured that it would be appropriate to post up a few remixes of his biggest hit, “Day ‘N’ Nite.” On this particular mixtape, there are 17 different versions of the song produced by people like Pitbull, Jim Jones, Trey Songz, Terry Urban, and of course Crookers.
This week’s Mixtape Mondays installment is a continuation of last week’s. So Far Gone is Drake‘s latest mixtape, and many people agree that it’s his best work so far. Personally, I feel like it’s at least as good as Comeback Season if not better. There’s a whole lot more singing happening on this mixtape than on the previous one. The standout tracks on So Far Gone are “Little Bit (feat. Lykke Li)” and “Best I Ever Had.” The latter has been getting some serious radio play since the album dropped back in mid-February. When Mixtape Mondays went on hiatus, so many people emailed /commented demanding that it needed to come back ASAP. We answered. Montréal-based producer Tor really lets his creativity and skills shine on Illinoize, a Sufjan Stevens-based remix tape. Tor pairs together the two very different genres of indie folk-rock and hip-hop to create an amazingly hypnotic and likeable blend of sounds. The music of multi-instrumentalist and indie hero Sufjan Stevens is perfectly matched to the sick vocals of Aesop Rock, Big Daddy Kane, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), C.L. New York-based producer Minty Fresh Beats has created Jaydiohead, an album that mashes up the best of both Jay-Z and Radiohead. It’s garnered much attention since it’s release, and has been featured on MTV.com, NME.com, and Last Call with Carson Daly, among others. Dick Flink and Nick Fenmore – or the Super Mash Bros – describe their group as “Girl Talk’s Hot Cousin.” Despite the abundance of family terminology, they manage to put together some extremely danceable stuff, with samples ranging from MGMT to Death Cab for Cutie to Nelly. With a few of these samples, it’s tempting to write off the group as a Girl Talk knockoff, but once you begin going through the album, listening to tracks like “Meet Me at Fantasy Island” (which samples Blink 182), or “Stop that Booty” (sampling Modest Mouse and Bubba Sparxx) you begin to understand that the Super Mash Bros sample sources much more diverse than Girl Talk. Spanning the spectrum from indie rock to Top 40 to european electronica, Fuck Bitches, Get Euros should be the next mixtape you download. [read more…]
