Up for grabs this week in Mixtape Mondays is Clipse’s We Got It 4 Cheap Volume 1. This album was released in early 2004, which makes it over 4 years old. Clipse is comprised of Malice and Pusha T, who are known for rapping mainly about drug-trafficking. This was the first mainstream album released after Clipse’s debut album entitled Lord Willin’. We Got It 4 Cheap Volume 1 is hosted by DJ Clinton Sparks, and also featured Ab-Liva and Sandman, who make up the other half of the Re-Up Gang. [read more…]

Well, what do you know…it’s Monday already. Time seems to move so fast. This week in the Mixtape Mondays segment, we have some Ratatat for you guys. More specifically, we have the Ratatat Remixes Volume I. Like the mixtapes prior, this mixtape is nothing new. It came out nearly four years ago, but it’s still great to blast. Ratatat’s sound incorperates electronic influences and is comprised of heavy beats using the synth and organ. Hailing from New York City, Ratatat is comprised of guitarist Mike Stroud and synthesizer driver and producer Evan Mast. They were made famous with the release of their hit singles Seventeen Years and Germany to Germany. Seventeen Years has since been featured in a Hummer Commercial and the movie Cloverfield, among other things. On Ratatat Remixes Volume I, the duo integrates electronica into 14 hip hop tracks, including Kanye West’s Get Em High, G-Unit’s Stunt 101, and Raekwon’s Smith Bros. This is one mixtape album you must download. [read more…]
This is one of my favorite mixtapes of all time. Originally released in 2006, Lil Weezyana is a classic, must-have mixtape that everyone needs to listen to. As usual, Lil Wayne has intense lyrics and an unmistakable flow on every single track. My favorite songs on the mixtape are David Banner (track 3), I Like Dat (track 12), and Pimp C (track 17). On Downtown (track 20) Lil Weezy mixes it up with 1000 Miles by Vanessa Carlton. It makes for an awesome clash. Check it out. [read more…]
One way to describe The Hood Internet could be “Girl Talk on Ritalin”. If you are like me, you tend to get sick of listening to mash-ups that suffer from ADD. After listening to one of these mash-up albums long enough (Feed the Animals anyone?), your head feels likes its going to explode à la Scanners. The Hood Internet is a breath of fresh air in the mash-up genre. In case you were wondering, The Hood Internet is comprised of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV). The Chicago based duo specialize in mashing up hip-hop with indie rock. On The Hood Internet vs Chicago, the two allow each sampled song to play for 30 seconds or longer which results in a much more listenable mixtape. [read more…]
Originally released in late 2004, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. I can be considered old, in a way. But, with theresurgance of M.I.A.’s popularity after both the release of her album Kala, in 2007, and the featuring of her hit single in the movie Pineapple Express, it seems only natural to post this classic of a mixtape. Featured on it are 21 tracks of M.I.A. (duh) collaborating with Philadelphia’s own DJ Diplo, or simply Diplo. My personal favorite track on this mixtape is number 7, entitled Amazon (Diplo Mix). It features M.I.A.’s Amazon mixed with Ciara’s Goodies. It’s pretty awesome. Listen to the first 8 tracks on Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. I below, and then download the entire mixtape. [read more…]
Kicking off our new Mixtape Mondays theme is hip-hop’s rising star Wale and his mixtape entitled The Mixtape About Nothing. Wale (pronouced as WAH-lay) is a Washington, D.C. based hip-hop genious who has been compared to such hip-hop greats as Lil’ Wayne and Lupe Fiasco. On The Mixtape About Nothing, Wale samples clips from the sitcom Seinfeld extensively. Track number 6, The Kramer, samples the now infamous Michael Richards Laugh Factory outburst, in which he repeatedly addressed a group of hecklers as “niggers”. Track 8, The Vacation from Ourselves, features Julia Louis-Dreyfus (aka Elaine) saying, [read more…]
