Indie-pop foursome Vampire Weekend just released a new single off of their upcoming album Contra through their website. The new song is called “Horchata” and it’s a slight departure from some of the stuff on their debut self-titled album. Vampire Weekend fans need not worry however, because it’s a fresh, new, even more upbeat sound. On the new single, they utilize a lot of synth and xylophone. Their sound is definitely evolving.
Contra is set to be released in January.
Listen and enjoy!

Sounds cool, but a bit more polished than the debut. I’d be disappointed if the whole album sounds like this, but if they are just diversifying, fine. I’d like most of it a bit grittier though.

"Meh" is the only way I would describe how I feel about this song; it’s not bad but it’s nothing I would write home about. I think I liked them better when they were quirky instead of indie twee post-punk (ie post-punk + violins, xylophone and happiness).

I like the mix of instruments, but this song was just a little off. I agree that their self titled album on average sounded better than this, but I’ll hold off on judgment until 2010. I like weird quirky music, like Architecture in Helsinki, but I don’t think this song does it very well. My first impression of them I thought they were douchebags that dropped out of some rich university and sang songs trying to sound witty and educated while riding on Mommy and Daddy’s Trust fund. But I heard the Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa cover by Hot Chip / Peter Gabriel and decided to give them another chance, not passing judgment so quickly this time around. I ended up liking them, but every once in awhile I get a wild hair, call them yuppies, and ban them from my playlists until I want to hear Walcott again.

If you don’t like them I have a suggestion for you, it might be a little rash, but DON’T FUCKING LISTEN TO IT!!!

I like it, but it doesn’t really sell the band. It’ll probably fit in a lot better when in context with the rest of the album. It does annoy me that he pronounces horchata like an east coast prep school kid (even though he is one). It also makes me want some horchata…
