British phenom M.I.A. (birthname Mathangi Arulpragasam) is back in the spotlight once again. This time her hit track “Paper Planes” from the album Kala has been featured in the trailer for the highly anticipated movie Pineapple Express.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, M.I.A. is a singer, record producer, songwriter, and visual artist from London. She is of Sri Lankan descent. Her style consists mainly of experimental sounds with bold, jarring, and ambient noises amalgamated into a song. She began to receive underground notoriety with the release of her track “Galang” onto the internet in 2004. M.I.A. was catapulted to fame with the release of her debut album Arular in March 2005. On Arular are such hits as “Bucky Done Gun,” “Amazon,” and a reproduced version of “Galang.” Her subsequent album Kala dropped in August 2007.
In December 2007, Kala was awarded the title of album of the year by Blender and Rolling Stone. She was also included in USA Today’s “100 Most Interesting People.”
