Kia Soul Collective in Philadelphia Sept. 25-27

KIA Soul Collective Philly

For everyone out there who’s going to be in the Philly area this weekend, go and check out the Kia Soul Collective. It’s a free three-day music festival that will feature a number of great acts, including Popo, Amanda Blank, The Drums, Francis and the Lights, and MGMT. When was the last time you went to a free music festival that actually had a decent lineup? There will also be a number of DJs there including Paul Devro, Sammy Slice, DJ Sega, Nick The V, Dirty Joe South, and Dave P.

The festival will be held over near center city at the 23rd Street Armory. Oh, and don’t worry if you’re in Boston and can’t make it, because the festival is making its way up here in a few weeks. I’ll keep you posted on that once they finalize the lineup.

Elderly People Review Dan Deacon, The Doves, Animal Collective, Young Jeezy, Bon Iver, Common

These are probably some of the funniest, cutest, and most honest music reviews you’ll ever see. The people over at run a weekly web TV show called Breakfast at Sulimay’s. The show takes place inside a diner in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philly. Every week, Bill, Ann, and Joe listen to some current artists and give us their honest, unadulterated opinions. In this video they review Dan Deacon’s “Snookered,” The Doves’ “Kingdom of Rust.” I can’t get enough of these. Why are they hating so much on Dan Deacon? On a side note, Joe is the man.

Mixtape Mondays: M.I.A. & Diplo - Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume I

Originally released in late 2004, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. I can be considered old, in a way. But, with theM.I.A. and Diplo Piracy Funds Terrorism Mixtaperesurgance of M.I.A.’s popularity after both the release of her album Kala, in 2007, and the featuring of her hit single in the movie Pineapple Express, it seems only natural to post this classic of a mixtape. Featured on it are 21 tracks of M.I.A. (duh) collaborating with Philadelphia’s own DJ Diplo, or simply Diplo. My personal favorite track on this mixtape is number 7, entitled Amazon (Diplo Mix). It features M.I.A.’s Amazon _mixed with Ciara’s _Goodies. It’s pretty awesome. Listen to the first 8 tracks on Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. I below, and then download the entire mixtape.
