One way to describe The Hood Internet could be “Girl Talk on Ritalin”. If you are like me, you tend to get sick of listening to mash-ups that suffer from ADD. After listening to one of these mash-up albums long enough (Feed the Animals anyone?), your head feels likes its going to explode à la Scanners. The Hood Internet is a breath of fresh air in the mash-up genre. In case you were wondering, The Hood Internet is comprised of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV). The Chicago based duo specialize in mashing up hip-hop with indie rock. On The Hood Internet vs Chicago, the two allow each sampled song to play for 30 seconds or longer which results in a much more listenable mixtape.

Originally released in late 2004, Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. I can be considered old, in a way. But, with theresurgance of M.I.A.’s popularity after both the release of her album Kala, in 2007, and the featuring of her hit single in the movie Pineapple Express, it seems only natural to post this classic of a mixtape. Featured on it are 21 tracks of M.I.A. (duh) collaborating with Philadelphia’s own DJ Diplo, or simply Diplo. My personal favorite track on this mixtape is number 7, entitled Amazon (Diplo Mix). Kicking off our new Mixtape Mondays theme is hip-hop’s rising star Wale and his mixtape entitled The Mixtape About Nothing. Wale (pronouced as WAH-lay) is a Washington, D.C. based hip-hop genious who has been compared to such hip-hop greats as Lil’ Wayne and Lupe Fiasco. On The Mixtape About Nothing, Wale samples clips from the sitcom Seinfeld extensively. Track number 6, The Kramer, samples the now infamous Michael Richards Laugh Factory outburst, in which he repeatedly addressed a group of hecklers as “niggers”.
